If you’ve just bought a brand new pack of presets, I’m sure you are excited to use them! Sometimes getting your presets installed and ready to use in Lightroom can be tricky though. If you follow the steps below, installing your presets will be a breeze and then you can get right to editing!
Installing Lightroom presets in latest version of Lightroom Classic CC (XMP files)
In order to use your presets in Lightroom Classic CC, they will need to be placed a in specific folder on your drive. If they are not in this folder, Lightroom will not be able to find them and you will not be able to apply them to your photos. Follow the instructions below to learn how to install your new presets on your computer!
How to install Lightroom presets
Step 1:
On a PC, go into Lightroom and Click on “Edit” in the top menu bar, then click on “Preferences”. If you are using a Mac, click on the “Lightroom” tab in the top menu bar, and then click on “Preferences”.
Step 2:
Once you have selected “Preferences” a new box will appear. There will be several tabs at the top, but you need to select “Presets”, which will be the second tab.
Step 3:
Select “Show Lightroom Develop Presets” Double click on the “Settings” folder to open it, if it is not open already.
Where to install Lightroom presets
Move the folder that contains all of your .xmp preset files into this folder.
Your presets are now installed! You may need to quit and restart Lightroom for them to appear, but after that, you are all set to start using your new presets!
Installing Lightroom presets in Lightroom Classic CC (.lrtemplate files)
If you have a slightly different version of Lightroom, or you need to install presets that are in the .lrtemplate file format, rather than .xmp format, (as older versions of Lightroom will not be able to open the .xmp files!), you can follow the instructions below to install your presets!

How to add Lightroom presets
Step 1:
Open Lightroom and navigate over to the Develop Module.
Step 2:
In the Presets section of the sidebar on the left side, click the “+” icon, and select “Import Presets”.
Step 3:
Navigate to the folder that contains the presets you wish to import. Select all the files you want to import into Lightroom.
Step 4:
Click “Import” and the presets will be added to the sidebar under the “User Presets” section.
Your presets are now ready to be used!
The way you install your presets may be a little different depending on which version of Lightroom you are using, but once they are installed you are ready to start editing!
